Andrew Overtoom, a director on Nickelodeon's "Spongebob Squarepants", pulled the project together with the help of fellow "Spongebob" workers who were facing impending lay-offs as production of the television series was coming to an end.
The group of first time filmmakers worked nights and weekends to shoot the film on a shoestring budget.The film was shot by Overtoom, with his 16mm EBM, on location in Nickelodeon animation studios are around Los Angeles.
